Bathurst - It is with heavy hearts, that we the family, announce the passing of Alcide Gamache of College St, Bathurst, which occurred Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Bathurst he was the son of the late Gilles and the late Delima (Chamberlain) Gamache.

Al is survived and will be missed by his siblings, Roger (Anne), Gerard (Halina), Eugene (Louise) and Monique (Donald Laffoley), as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Yvon and Leo

He will also be missed by his extended family at the Boudreau Residence where he had been living for the past four and a half years since his diagnosis of Dementia. He was very happy and well there, and claimed he was living in a hotel; for the delicious meals that were served in the dining room, his room being made up and his laundry done. He was as happy as could be.

Alcide, known to many in his younger years as Zeke, would be found behind the bar of various drinking establishments in Bathurst as the quiet bar-tender. He had a great sense of humour; he didn’t say much, but when he did have something to say it was well worth hearing a trait that carried him through his entire life.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Boudreau Residence who helped and supported Alcide during his illness. The love and care they provided will never be forgotten. Also, the family is so very appreciative of the compassionate care provided by Dr. Ault. To the medical staff of 3Rd floor and also Palliative Care of the Chaleur Regional Hospital, your kindness and empathy during this difficult time will always be remembered.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held on Friday February 2, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. from Elhatton Funeral Chapel. Donations in memory of Alcide may be made to the Kidney Foundation of New Brunswick, Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or a charity of the donor’s choice.
