Bathurst, NB – Mrs. Clara Nellie (Chapman) Daley, of Bathurst, died on February 2, 2009 at the age of 89. Clara was born in Janeville, New Brunswick on March 4, 1919, daughter of Stewart and Jennie (Jennings) Chapman. She is survived by her husband Fenton Daley; sons, Stewart (Cathy) of Caledon, ON, Ralph (Joan Cusack) of Dartmouth, NS, and daughter Rev. Dr. Beverly Daley of Boiestown, NB; 4 grandchildren, Kelly Thompson of Orange, CA, Cheryl Daley of Halifax, NS, and Michelle & Sean Daley of Caledon, ON; sisters-in-law Alice Chapman, Louise Daley, Gertrude Daley, and Crystal Crowther, and brother-in-law Oscar (Olga) Daley; and nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her brother Ellsworth Chapman, and two infant siblings brother Harold Stewart and a sister Annie Evelyn, and two grandsons, Christopher Thompson & Mark Daley. Clara graduated from Bathurst High School in 1937 and the provincial Normal School in 1938. She taught in the Bathurst area until her marriage in 1946, and resumed her teaching career as a substitute teacher when her children were in school. Clara was an active member of First United Church, a choir member for over 60 years, a Life Member of United Church Women, a past Worthy Matron of Bathurst Chapter #22 Order of the Eastern Star, Past Provincial President of Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, New Brunswick Command, Past President (and long-time organist) of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Herman J. Good, VC, Branch #18 , Bathurst, and she was a member of Heritage Bathurst Trust. She was awarded the Centennial Medal (for service to the community) during Canada's Centennial year in 1967, the Certificate of Merit and the Meritorious Service Award from the Legion, and she was made a Freeman of the City of Bathurst in 2003. The body will rest after 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. Funeral Service will be held on Friday (February 6, 2009) at 2 p.m. from the First United Church, St. Patrick St., Bathurst. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 7 to 9 and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery in the spring.
