Doran White, 87 of the Robert L. Knowles Veterans Unit and formerly of Hennessy Street, Bathurst, died suddenly Saturday, July 17 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital with family by his side.

Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late Alphonse and Celina (Melanson) White. He was predeceased by his loving  wife of 54 years  Doreen (Aube) White, March 2010 and twin sons Stephen Andrew and David Brian, June 1956.

He was the loving father to three children, Catherine van Vliet of Kingston, ON, Anne White of Armstrong, BC, and Stephen (Wendy Carron) White of Mount Hope, ON., one brother Gregory White of Port Coquitlam, BC and one sister Joan Urquhart of Beaverbank, NS.  He also leaves behind three loving grandchildren Eric, Kiersten and Anna, and several nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by siblings Irene Bourque, Gertrude Stever, Elmer White, Rita White, Albert White, Lawrence White and Pauline Sweet.

Doran served in WWII with the Royal Canadian Engineers, Reg. # G3999, who were deployed with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division to France on D-Day.  He remained connected to veterans as a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Upon returning from the war, he became an employee of Consolidated Bathurst, where in 1947 he suffered a severe spinal injury.  Through his determination, tenacity and contrary to medical prognosis, he learned to walk again.   He developed a passion for golf as a young teenager and pursued many happy and successful years as a golfer at the Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club.

In honour of his spirit, Doran’s family invites you to attend a mass at the Holy Family Church on Thursday morning, July 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the Church basement.  For anyone wishing to send tokens of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society.  Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home.  (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
