Louis Melanson 1923-2011

It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Louis Melanson of Bathurst, which occurred Tuesday (June 21, 2011) at Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst at the age of 88.

Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late Jerome and Annie (Theriault) Melanson.

 He is survived by three daughters, Yvette (Hubert Mazerolle) of Miramichi City, Sr. Patricia Melanson FMA of Bathurst, Joanne (Carl Nickum) of Bathurst;  four Sons, Gregory (Anne Marie) of Bathurst, Roger (Florence) of Bathurst, Louie (Yvonne) of Newfoundland, Tommy (Barbara) of Winnipeg. 

Extended member of family, a niece Juanita More (nee Christie) of Hamilton ON.

14 grandchildren Lisette, Monique, Danielle, Michel, Lisa, Rebecca, Peter, Patsy Anne, Jill, Robin, Craig, Matthew, Jeremy and Joshua.  17 great-grandchildren who loved and will miss him very much.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Predeceased by his wife Odille (Aubé) Melanson; sisters, Mary Sylvie, Marguerite Bourgaise, Francis, Priscilla, Annie Marguerite Lea, Mary Camilla, Leona and Vina; brothers, Philias, Thomas, Arthur, Bennie and Joseph Reginald; sons-in-law, Shyne Carter and Harold Hills.

He served in World War II with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals (RCCS) in Canada and overseas, Sargeant 2RNBR North Shore Reserve and was a member of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst.  He worked at the former Bathurst Pulp and Paper Mill for 45 years before retiring.  He was a Scout leader for the South Bathurst Boy Scout for many years, was a member of the Bathurst Planning Commission and was a very active member of the former St. Theresa Church parish.  Louis spent many hours on the river of the surrounding areas fly fishing for salmon and dipped his line many of the lakes and rivers for trout with his wife and friends.  He was a member of the Nipisiquit Salmon Association.  Besides his love of fishing, he spent many hours in his fly tying room making flies for himself and in later years for many of the other fisherman of the rivers.  Louis will be missed by his family and friends for all the kind words, smiles, laughter and hugs he more then willing gave to everyone he met through out his life.

The body will rest after 2 p.m. Friday at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.  Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday morning (June 25, 2011) at 11 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. Andrew St., Bathurst.  Visiting hours are Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of Funeral.  Donations in memory of Louis may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
