Bathurst – Long time businessman, Wilbur Elhatton, of St. George St., Bathurst, peacefully passed away on Tuesday July 11, 2017 in his 93rd year.
Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late Frederick and Edna (Wilbur) Elhatton.
Wilbur was a veteran of World War II with the Royal Canadian Navy serving in Canada and overseas, devoted member and past president and Life Member of the Herman J. Good, V.C. Br. 18, Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst, receiving his 70 year service pin, also the Meritorious Service Medal in 1964 followed by the Palm Leaf Medal, received the "Ordre National de la Légion D’Honneur" from France in 2014, member and was secretary of the Bathurst Rotary Club for many years recipient of the Paul Harris Award, past president of the New Brunswick Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, avid snowmobiler, fisherman and an Arctic Adventurer.
Upon returning from his service in the Navy, he received his Diploma from the Boston School of Anatomy and Embalming in 1947 and began to operate the family business "Elhatton’s Funeral Home Ltd." until his unofficial retirement around 2009, because Wilbur always like to keep an eye on the business.
Besides his wife, Jeannine (Blanchard) Elhatton, he is survived by four children: Laurie Elhatton of Halifax, N.S., Kelly Avery (Robert) of Santa Barbara, CA, USA, Patrick (Louise) of Bathurst and Terri Lovegrove (Michael) of Moncton.
Nine grandchildren: Erin, Cameron, Olivia, Logan, Georgia, Kincade, Keagan, Ryan and Emma.
Two sisters: Mary Power of New Westminster, B.C. and Maurita Pelkola of Bathurst. Several nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was predeceased by three brothers: Vaughn, Cletus, Gerry and a sister, Gladys.
Visiting hours will be on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday afternoon July 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. from the Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. Andrew St., Bathurst.
Donations in memory of Wilbur may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
