It is with great sadness the family wishes to announce the passing of George Allan Haines Scott, of Big River, which occurred Saturday June 19, 2021 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst at the age of 80.

Born in Bathurst, he was the son of the late Thomas Haines and Blanche (Knowles) Scott.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Black) Scott and is survived by one son,

Prentice Scott (Jennifer) of Windsor, ON. One daughter, April (Todd) Scott of Sarnia, ON.

One stepdaughter, Cindy Pickard (Joel) of Bathurst. One stepson, Shane Branch of USA.

Seven grandchildren: Ethan, Erik and Emily Scott, Steven, Dillion, Amanda Barton and Jordan Pickard.

Five brothers: Greg (John) of Halifax, NS, Gordon (Kay) of Clifton, NB, Stephen (Kathy) of Bathurst and Brent (Janet) of Glassville, NB.

Sister-in-laws: May Scott of Big River and Holly Scott of Salmon Beach. Several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Haines was predeceased by brothers: Nelson, Derwyn and a sister, Sandra "Dolly".

Haines loved hockey. Not only did he play but over the years he coached, refereed, managed, trained, and even commentated the game. He was a lifetime fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and held season tickets to the Bathurst Titians.

He was involved with and volunteered his time over the years with many organizations including the First United Church, A.A., The Royal Canadian Legion, Bathurst Minor Hockey Association and so many more over the years to mention.

After a brief adventure in Toronto as a young man working for Roundtree, Haines’s heart pulled him home where he finished his career with Canada Post.

Haines was blessed with the gift of gab and could make friends anywhere. People knew him from P.E.I. to the Yukon.

In memory of Haines the family would like to share a passage that he lived by and taught to many of us.

“God grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change…… Courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference.”

Public visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Elhatton Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com) St. George St., Bathurst.

Funeral service will be held from the First United Church, St. Patrick St by invitation only.

Donations in memory of Haines may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer time donation to your local minor hockey association or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
