It is with heavy hearts the family wishes to announce the passing of Retired Staff Sergeant Joseph Benoit Bernadin St Onge (Ben) which occurred October 15, 2022 at Chaleur Regional Hospital at the age 81.
Born in Carleton, Québec he was the son of the late Roland and Léontine (Degrace) St Onge, and is survived by his wife Diana (Dunnet) St Onge, one daughter Michelle (Cameron Gunn), his grandchildren Kelsey, Zachary, Harper, Jaime, Darcy and Raegan.
He will be sadly missed by his three sisters: Henriette St Onge Englander (late Alec), Lise St Onge Ouellet (late Claude), Francine St Onge (Michel Cyr) and one brother Jacques St Onge, several nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, and one God child, including all his in-laws the Dunnet family.
Besides his parents Ben was pre-deceased by his son Sergeant Joseph Benoit Bernadin St Onge (Wendy).
A special thank you to a long-time friend Dr. Tony Wade, Dr. Pierre O’Brien Medical Oncologist at the Dr. Sheldon H. Rubin Oncology Clinic at the Moncton City Hospital, as well as all the nurses and support staff on 4 East and Palliative Care departments at the Chaleur Regional Hospital. The excellent care and kindness that Ben received from all of you will never be forgotten.
Ben pursued all his interests with fervor, and he was most passionate about his 35-year career as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served in Manitoba, Québec and New Brunswick, as well as Internationally, and worked in general duties, federal policing, and security services. He was most proud of his time as a Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of various detachments, protecting and serving the people in his community. His last posting was in Bathurst until his retirement, however, even after being retired Ben maintained his RCMP Camaraderie by being an active member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Veterans Association and the International Police Association.
After his retirement, he founded Ben St Onge Security and Investigation Services Inc. which was very successful.
On a more personal level, Ben was very social. He loved to golf, especially on Men’s Night at the Gowan Brae; he enjoyed going to the camp with the boys on Wednesdays; he loved canoeing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, playing darts and not to forget, enjoyed watching the Titans.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Ferguson, Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Friday, October 21, 2022 at 2 pm at Holy Family Church in Bathurst, NB. Donations can be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation in Ben’s memory.
