On Saturday, October 29, 2022, Thomas Gregory Scott passed away peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the age of 77.

Born in Bathurst, Greg was the son of the late Thomas and Blanche (Knowles) Scott.

He is survived by three brothers: Gordon (Kay) of Clifton, Stephen (Kathy) of Bathurst, Brent (Janet) of Wicklow, NB, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Holly of Salmon Beach, NB and May of Big River, NB, and two aunts, Edna Spragg and Eleanor Scott of Bathurst.

Besides his parents, Greg is pre-deceased by his sister Dolly Jagoe (Late Roger), and brothers, Haines (Late Betty), Derwyn and Nelson. He is also pre-deceased by his partner, Reverend Canon John Smith of Halifax, NS.

Greg was a true believer of life-long learning. He graduated from Bathurst High School in 1964 and continued his post-secondary education in Fredericton at the New Brunswick Teachers College. After earning his teacher’s certificate, he continued his education and graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a BA in 1974, a BEd in 1976, and a Masters of Education Degree in 1981. In 1983 he obtained a Certificate of Teaching a Second Language from the University of Laval.

Greg taught at several schools early on in his career including, Salmon Beach, Bass River, JG Chalmers, and Bathurst High Schools. He eventually settled in Fredericton at George Street Junior High School where he taught his favorite subjects, Math and French Immersion, for 30 years. Greg spoke fondly of the students and staff he encountered and shared many stories of his time at George Street. His students were very special to him.

After retirement, Greg moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he continued his passion for studying and attended NSCAD University earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2015. Greg was very talented, played several types of musical instruments and had a passion for oil painting. He created many custom pieces of art for family and friends, and every year he replicated one of those pieces into hand crafted Christmas cards. Greg also enjoyed travelling. He and John were perfect travel partners and were always open to leave the ‘beaten path’ to explore what nature had to offer. No trip was complete without having driven on a ‘dirt road’. Greg lived a humble life and it was the little things that were important to him; going for walks in the Halifax Gardens, reading the daily news, solving calculus problems, and receiving his nightly phone calls.

The family would like to thank the staff of 3-IMCU at the QEII Health Sciences Center for the wonderful care Greg received, and Ken Steele for always being there. Your compassion and thoughtfulness are greatly appreciated.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 6, 2022, from 7-9 pm at Elhatton’s Funeral Home, Bathurst, NB. The funeral service will take place on Monday, November 7 at 11:00 am from Christ Church in Clifton, NB. Interment will be in the Christ Church Cemetery, Clifton, NB at a later date.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Anglican Parish of New Bandon, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
