Mildred (Millie) McLaughlin, beloved wife of the late Patrick McLaughlin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the Robert L. Knowles Veteran’s Unit in Bathurst. She was 99.
Born in Tracadie, NB, she was a daughter of the late Clara (Savoy) and Albert Robichaud. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years (Paddy), and her daughter, Claire Anne (Greg) Bungay, as well as by her sisters Helen Taylor and Myrtle Gay, and her brothers Cosgrove (Cossie), David and James Robichaud. She leaves to remember her with love her daughter Peggy (Stephen) Ogden of Stratford, PEI, and her sons Patrick (Jill) and John (Cathy) of Bathurst, and Danny (Wanda) of Cornwall, PEI. She was also adored by her grandchildren Tom, Michael, Scott, Patrick, Michael, Ben, Courtney, Meaghan, Mauryah, Kathleen, Annie, Maureen, Mary, Ryan and Katie, as well as her great-grandchildren Claire, Emily, Aaron, Liam, Charlotte, Julia, Ella, John, Lydia, November, Iris, Millie and David. She will be greatly missed by her many relatives and friends, including her close companions, Connie Morrison and Dawn Scott with whom she shared many important personal experiences.
Millie graduated at the top of her class from the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Chatham, and later worked in various healthcare roles over the years, including hospital nursing, physicians’ offices and industrial nursing at Consolidated Bathurst Pulp and Paper Mill, and Brunswick Mines. She was past-president and a life-member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Herman J. Good, V.C, Branch 18 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and was a life member of the Holy Family Catholic Women’s League and the Irish Canadian Cultural Association. She was deeply religious in her Catholic faith.
Known for her small but meaningful acts of kindness towards others, Millie brought a peaceful presence wherever she went. She cherished time at her house on Stout Court, where she and Pat raised their family, and was delighted to celebrate her 99th birthday there only eight days before her passing. In her younger years, she and Pat enjoyed travelling to Europe to celebrate important milestones in the history of WWII battles, such as anniversaries of D-Day and of the Liberation of Holland, as well as trips to Ireland (which held a special cultural and ancestral significance to her), and to Prince Edward Island for wonderful family holidays.
Her family wishes to thank all those who provided exceptional medical care to her over the years, including Dr. Tony Wade and Dr. Natalie Cauchon, as well as her favorite nurses, Jill McLaughlin, Myrna Chamberlain, Kathleen McLaughlin, and Carol Berube. In addition, they wish to thank the incredible management and staff of the Robert L. Knowles Veteran’s Unit, where she lived for the last 22 months. The kindness shown to her and all residents at the unit is second to none, and this quickly became her home, with new close friends who truly made her life joyful to the end.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst on Tuesday, September 19th, 2023 from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023 at 2 p.m. from Holy Family Church.
Those wishing to honour her with an expression of sympathy are invited to donate to the IWK Children’s Hospital or to a charity of choice.
